Summer Days

Well, they say it is summer but you would never know it by the weather. It is has been cool and rainy for quite awhile now. The forecast says that it is to be sunny and warm for the next week or two. I’ll believe it when it happens. Oh me of little faith. I am when it comes to the weather.

Anyway, it may be summer in name only but it is still summer. This means that we are finished school and the next few weeks are ours to whittle away as we see fit. It has only been a week since we finished this year’s school work so everything is still fresh. Just being able to sleep in until 7:00 and then taking my time in getting ready for the day is a sweet change. I have no idea when we are going to start back to school and, right now, I don’t even want to think about it.

So our days start slow and sweet. Everyone is awake by 9:00. We get our own breakfasts and then we congregate in the living room with our food to read Harry Potter. Tessa is 11 1/2 years old. It is now time for her to read the Harry Potter series. She has been waiting 3 years for this moment. Many times during those 3 years, the years were peppered with whinings of ‘I will never get to read them,’ ‘Everyone gets to read before me,’ ‘I never get to do anything.’ She now gets to do, well, not everything but the most important thing so far: read the Harry Potter series. And she is enjoying them as much as her older sister did.

We started the series three weeks ago and we are now on the third series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. We have a rhythm as to our readings. We usually read two chapters a day. After we have read enough, we then watch the corroborating scenes in the movie. This way we don’t have to wait to finish the whole book before we enjoy the movie.

After we are done with Harry Potter, the day is ours to do with it as we are so inclined. Sometimes we do yard work, sometimes we clean house, sometimes we go on a road trip, sometimes we bake yummy things like pita chips or breakfast oatmeal or we just do nothing. Regardless of how we spend our day, the foundation of it is always Harry Potter. As it should be.
